Black Female Entrepreneurs

This topic is dedicated to my “Sisters-In-Business”. I’ve highlighted a few, but there are so many more to include you. If they can, you can!

Before you can grow your business, you must first understand theprofit potential of your industry and assess your financial position. Engage in market research and identify all the costs involved to bring your product to market (don’t forget about your labor costs). This will give you the information you need to arrive at thebest price for your product or service. Unfortunately, many women-owned businesses don’t generate high revenues because they have not identified the right price or audience for their product or service. Work with a certified public accountant (CPA) to help you create financial statements that will help you to discover revenue-generating opportunities and cost reduction strategies for your target audience.

Mellody Hobson

The Denver Broncos announced earlier this week that Walton bought the franchise for a record-setting $4.65 billion. The purchase will be completed pending approval from the NFL’s finance committee and at least three-fourths (24) of the league’s 32 owners.

In Walton’s statement about the winning bid to purchase the franchise, he made mention of a Black woman, Mellody Hobson being part of The Walton-Penner group, who would be the new owners of the Denver Broncos. This would make Hobson the first Black woman to be part of an NFL ownership group.

Mellody Hobson is an American businesswoman who is President and co-CEO of Ariel Investments, and the chairwoman of Starbucks Corporation. She is the former chairwoman of DreamWorks Animation, having stepped down after negotiating the acquisition of DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., by NBCUniversal in August 2016.

Yvonne Lorraine Jackson

Being a black female is challenging enough in the world of being black and successful. Being a black female entrepreneur is very challenging, especially depending on the industry in which we provide services. I have had white male counterparts talk in my presence as if I was not standing there among them.

But, in those moments of opportunity, I “Rise Up” and keep it professional, because I am confident in who I am and value my worth!

Melissa Butler

The Lip Bar is a vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand that exists to help change the way you think about beauty. Melissa Butler founded The Lip Bar with inclusive ideals. Her journey from stocks and bonds to beauty is one that she describes as natural, not because she loved makeup, but because she was frustrated with the industry and therefore created a solution. Butler wasn’t willing to accept cosmetics filled with chemicals because she believes beauty doesn’t have to compromise health. She also hated traditional beauty campaigns and their linear approach of beauty.

Kristen Daniel

Kristen Daniel is an Atlanta based entrepreneur who founded Ateaelle. Her company is an urban lifestyle and fashion company creating apparel and brand experiences that blend messages rooted in black excellence, pop culture and hip hop.

Ateaelle’s mission is to create a sense of nostalgia while evoking conversation and continued adoration through Atlanta.

Throughout history, we have been able to learn from amazing Black Female Entrepreneurs like Opray Winfrey, Rihanna Fenty, Beyonce Knowles and Madame CJ Walker just to name a few.

These are some of the most strongest and driven business owners. They are courageous, strong-willed, driven, and beautiful. Most are the first in their families to be successful and they pave the way for future generations.

Women make up 46% of the Black Entrepreneurs. Black Female business owners are the highest percentage of female business owners. Being a Black Female Entrepreneur is one of the most exciting and rewarding things I could ever do. To make sure you not only start your own business and grow your business putting together a financial game plan is essential to success.
